Northern Lights Above Umeå
September 2023
Just a few days after we arrived at our new home in Umeå, we were welcomed by a spectacular Aurora Borealis. The Northern Lights were caused by a substantial coronal mass ejection (CME). When plasma is ejected from the sun and collides with Earth’s magnetosphere, it can disturb the latter, resulting in changes in the trajectories of charged particles. Light will be emitted when these particles ionize molecules in our atmosphere, which we see as an amazing phenomenon, lighting up the night sky.
